Traceability & Transparency
True traceability and transparency are among KANY’s most important commitments:
True traceability guarantees the certified origin of the product and therefore makes it possible to build a clean supply chain that actually meets buyer´s claims and respects the needs of end-consumers.
KANY guarantees producers are paid fair prices, fair premiums and above all a fair weight on cocoa beans, which is exceptional within a highly fraudulent environment. It is also the most effective way to quickly address the need for vital income for farmers.
Price & Premium
The farm gate price for conventional cocoa beans is set by the Ivorian government, once for the new peak season in October, and then again for the lean season in April. If this price does not cover the costs of production, KANY increases it to ensure that farm production is profitable.
In addition to the conventional farm gate price, KANY pays significant premiums to the farmers. These premium rates are based on set product pricing and are updated twice per year. The organic premiums of 20% are paid to the farmers by mobile-money transfer, with half going to the men and the other half to the registered women members.
Another 10% of the farmgate price is paid to the fair trade fund, which is administered by the local fair trade committee.
KANY´S achievements
- Supplying villages have independent fair trade committees
- Farmers are trained on regenerative organic agriculture and on the Dynamic Agroforestry (DAF) system
- KANY has invested in developing its operations, including additional storage and transport capabilities, farmers supervision, farmers and staff training, and more.
- Premiums are paid straight to farmers by traceable mobile-money transfer.
- Fair trade premiums have been invested in child education (80%), water provision (10%) and worker benefits.
